The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has issued a £40,000 fine to Studios MG Ltd, a software consultancy, for sending 9,000 unlawful marketing emails selling face masks during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Studios MG Ltd was not in the business of supplying personal protective equipment, but instead bought the face masks to sell for profit...

Have your say: the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched a public consultation on its draft statutory guidance, which is ‘designed to ensure the rights and freedoms of individuals are protected’. The draft guidance sets out the ICO’s powers, how it is used and how fines are calculated, while assuring businesses that the powers will be used ‘proportionately and consistently’.

HM Treasury has announced that the coronavirus (COVID-19) Job Support Scheme (JSS) has been expanded to all UK firms which have been legally required to close due to the pandemic. Those eligible under the JSS will receive grants to pay two thirds of the wages of staff who are unable to work, up to a maximum of £2,100 a month. Businesses under the JSS are not required to contribute to wages but will cover pension and national insurance contributions. The scheme will commence on 1 November 2020 and be available for six months, with a review in January 2020...

Have your say: the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has launched a consultation on giving the Small Business Commissioner (SBC) new powers which would enable them to ensure that small businesses are being paid on time. The new powers include the ability to order companies to pay their partners when a complaint for a late payment has been instigated or upheld, launch investigations without the need to first receive a complaint, compel companies to share information during an investigation conducted by the SBC and claim investigation costs from a company if there have been adverse findings.

The consultation closes on 24 December 2020.

The government is obviously recognising the level of pressure the judicial system is under as lawyers are exempt from self-isolation rules, which means that if your case is due to come to court you will have legal representation because lawyers who test positive for COVID-19 would not be breaking the law if they go to court when they are required to self-isolate....
